Eel River Valley Earthquake Commemoration

In a heartwarming display of unity and resilience, the Eel River Valley recently commemorated the anniversary of the 2022 earthquake that shook the community. The event brought together key stakeholders, disaster management organizations, local leaders, Humboldt County Supervisor Bushnell, Rio Dell Mayor Debora Garnes, and families impacted by the earthquake, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing recovery efforts.

The gathering included representatives from Disaster Case Management, Long Term Disaster Recovery Group, Humboldt COAD, Changing Tides Family Services, and Habitat for Humanity Yuba/Sutter. The collaboration underscored the strength that emerges when communities join forces to overcome challenges.

Habitat for Humanity played a crucial role by actively participating in the event thanks to the Habitat ReStore team generously sending Admin and Family Services staff with a pallet full of essential items, including clothing, bedding, flashlights, and kids’ toys. These items were made available for all attendees, reflecting the organization’s commitment to supporting those affected by the earthquake.

The weather, symbolic of the community’s resilience, momentarily cleared up as the Rio Dell Firefighters hosted a BBQ, serving hotdogs to the attendees. This brief reprieve from the rain allowed the community to come together in triumph, celebrating their collective strength and determination as they continue to rebuild.

Habitat for Humanity’s impact extended beyond the event, as the organization announced the completion of contracts that will begin the construction on two homes within Rio Dell. The funding for these projects was graciously provided by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, exemplifying the power of collaboration between local government and non-profit organizations.

Looking ahead, Habitat for Humanity is set to commence construction on three additional homes utilizing USDA 504 Disaster Funds. These efforts represent a significant stride towards restoring a sense of normalcy for families affected by the earthquake.

Capturing the essence of the community spirit, Rio Dell’s Mayor, Debora Garnes, addressed her constituents with pride, stating, “We are Rio Dell-lightful, and I am proud of our community!” Her words resonate as a testament to the indomitable spirit that defines the residents of Rio Dell.

As we reflect on this anniversary, let us celebrate the progress made and the unity that continues to drive the rebuilding efforts in the Eel River Valley. Together, we stand strong, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, communities can emerge stronger and more resilient.
