Finding Home: How Harmony Village Restored Hope for Kaysi and Greg

Kaysi and Greg have stood side by side for 23 years. Over more than two decades, they built a life together and raised two sons, weathering life’s ordinary ups and downs as a team. But during the height of the pandemic, the couple found themselves facing frightening obstacles.

Only days before Kaysi and Greg’s interview, Kaysi unexpectedly had a stroke and needed hospitalization. Given the time to rest and enjoy a little time for her birthday, we were then able to sit down to talk about their story when the time was right.

Curled up together on the sofa, Kaysi smiled warmly while Greg, soft-spoken and steady, let her take the lead in telling most of their journey.

Their hardship began a few years ago. While Greg was working a shift at a local MacDonald’s, he was attacked by a stranger, which left him with serious brain injuries. What started as a medical emergency quickly became a financial crisis.

“He was able to get temporary disability,” Kaysi explained. “That helped us stay where we were living for a little while. But after the disability ended, we couldn’t keep up, and we got evicted.”

For more than two years, stability seemed out of reach for the two. They slept in their car, stayed with friends and family when possible, and rotated through hotel rooms they could barely afford. Each day was spent searching for a way forward.

When they began asking around the community for help, one name kept coming up: Habitat for Humanity.

“We went into Habitat for Humanity for help,” Kaysi said. “Where we worked with Karen. She’s awesome. She did most of the work, if not, all of it to help get us into housing.”

After meeting with a panel to determine eligibility, they received life-changing news a few months later and moved into their new home at Harmony Village.

“Everything changed after that,” Kaysi acknowledged. “It’s changed our lives.”

For the first time in years, they had more than shelter—they had stability. Even more unexpected was the sense of belonging they found. “We love being part of the Harmony Village community,” Kaysi shared. “Everybody here is so friendly. People try to help when they can and check on each other. The staff are awesome, too. If we need something or something needs to be fixed, they’re really good about making it happen.”

That culture of care and connection has helped keep them grounded as they continue navigating recovery, though their journey isn’t over. Greg is still working to secure permanent disability benefits, and the uncertainty makes long-term planning difficult. For now, their focus is simple: take each day as it comes.

“We want to keep improving our finances and save money when we can,” Kaysi said. “But right now, it’s about taking things day by day.”

For Greg, progress is found in quiet victories, the comfort of their partnership and the safety of a place to call home. “We’re just trying to check on each other every day,” he said.

After years marked by hardship and uncertainty, Harmony Village has given them something special: a foundation. Not just walls and a roof, but stability, community, and renewed hope. And as they move forward, one day at a time—they do it together, grounded in the simple but powerful truth that home is not just a place. It’s the peace of knowing you no longer have to face the storm alone.
